About the Recordings

Ideally you should bring a recording device to your class to learn with at home. If this is not possible I recommend you:

1. Listen to the tune at a regular speed a few times until it starts to 'sink in' - this is half the battle in learning a tune - getting it into your head.

2. Then listen to the slower recording of the first or 'A part' of the tune

  • Listen over a few times
  • Allow the tune to play for a short while and then hit pause
  • Then try to hum back what you have heard

3. Using this method you can 'learn' the first part of the tune

  • Follow a similar method as in no2 above but insteading of humming attempt to recreate the music on your instrument
  • Continue until you can play the first part on your instrument and play along with the recording
  • Continue until you can play the first part on your instrument without the recording.

4. Start again with the recording of the second or 'B part' and so on.

5. When you have learned the whole tune - play each part twice ie AABB. Train yourself to remember as much as you can. If you get this far you are doing very well indeed!

REMEMBER: Be patient, it may be difficult at first if you are not accustomed to learning by ear.

The more you listen the easier it will get, and the work you put into learning one tune will serve you for every other tune you attempt to learn by ear and your playing in general!

If you cannot find the first few notes of the tune on your instrument - click here - I have given the first few notes written in ABC type format to get you started for a selection of session tunes (should have recordings here - if not let me know). You may also find www.thesession.org very useful in finding the notes for tunes - it is a fantastic resource for traditional musicians.

More Information

If you attend the group classes you should find a basic recording of the class tunes here.

The 'session tunes' will be added here too. Click for more details.
