Practicing scales, not a 'trad' staple, is nevertheless beneficial in...:

• Working on the accuracy of your tuning
• Giving a chance to focus on the other fiddle / violin basics, such as good smooth bow strokes, violin hold etc.
• Understanding the finger positions in scales will help you later on if you are interested in / studying other musical styles, music theory and the concept of musical 'keys'. Very useful information!

Start off by checking the tuning on your instrument - if you don't have a guitar tuner you can use the first recording to tune by ear.

Practice each scale by playing along to the recording to check finger positions, its best to work on one scale at a time and master the finger positions for that particular scale. Remember! Speed is not the aim, focus on on straight, clean bow strokes and good tuning. Goodluck :)
